All of the Apple talk at the turn of the year appeared to be focused on when the Cupertino based company were planning on launching refreshed models of the iPhone and iPad. The final quarter of 2012 saw us unexpectedly introduced to the fourth-generation iPad, as well as the iPad mini and just this week Apple shocked us all again by announcing a 128GB newcomer to the existing iPad range.
Breakdown: What you need to know
It doesn’t bring any new features, nor does it come with a new all singing all dancing design but the latest iOS hardware does satisfy the needs of those who want additional internal storage on their post-PC gadgets. The new premium model hits the market under the existing fourth-generation guise and will double the storage capacity of the largest currently available iPad, going from 64GB to a massive 128GB.
What’s the cost?
As you might expect, that additional internal storage comes at a price with the Wi-Fi only version hitting shelves at a wallet busting £639. Those who require a data connection on the move will need to snap up the Wi-Fi plus cellular model that will retail at £739 in the United Kingdom. That sort of price range puts the new model just shy of a bottom of the range MacBook Air.
What could I get for my old iPad
Why not check out the value you could trade in your old iPad for if you think you want to upgrade. The iPad has only dropped in value on average 8% in 2012, in fact it’s one of the best devices for holding it’s value.
Should you buy one for the price of a good laptop?
The choice for consumers will be whether or not they can genuinely justify purchasing a tablet in a walled garden for £739, or whether or not that money would be better spent buying a powerful Windows based laptop or investing in one of Apple’s entry MacBooks. The release of the device shouldn’t interfere with the company’s plans to refresh the iPad and iPad mini line during the course of this year, but it does give additional choice to those who were planning on purchasing one of the fourth-generation models.
Is Apple the right company to stick with?
After a couple of weeks of disappointing performance in the markets Apple’s share price by a rather small 1.1% immediately after the iPad announcement. The device will be go on general sale in the United Kingdom next month, but it could be worthwhile holding out for a range refresh in the near future.
